Cao Bang Loop tours

The province east of Ha Giang, and still largely off the backpacker circuit. Fewer riders, bigger water, and a pass with fourteen stacked hairpins that most people have never heard of.

Why add Cao Bang

Ha Giang gets the crowds; Cao Bang gets the water. Ban Gioc is the widest waterfall in Vietnam, straddling the Chinese border, and you can raft a bamboo boat right up to the spray. Nguom Ngao Cave runs two kilometres into the karst below it. Pac Bo, where Ho Chi Minh crossed back into Vietnam in 1941, sits at the head of a stream so clear you can count the stones.

And the riding is different in character: longer valleys, less traffic, and Khau Coc Cha — a switchback climb that photographs like a ribbon dropped down a mountain.

Two ways to do it

Both packages can start in Ha Giang city or in Cao Bang city — tell us which suits your route and we will reverse the itinerary.

What you will see

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall — 300 metres wide across the Quay Son River, with bamboo rafts running under the lowest tier.
  • Nguom Ngao Cave — two kilometres of lit chambers and stone formations inside the limestone.
  • Pac Bo — Lenin Stream, Coc Bo Cave and the short climb to Karl Marx Peak.
  • Khau Coc Cha Pass — the switchback climb above Bao Lac, and the reason many riders come.
  • Phuc Sen blacksmith village — Nung families still forging knives by hand over charcoal.
  • Ma Phuc Pass and Angel Eye Mountain — a limestone peak with a hole punched clean through it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine Cao Bang with the Ha Giang Loop?
Yes, and most people who ride Cao Bang do exactly that. Finish the Ha Giang Loop, sleep in Ha Giang city, and start the Cao Bang route the next morning — or run it in reverse if you are coming from the east.
Is Cao Bang harder riding than Ha Giang?
Not harder, longer. The distances between stops are greater and the roads are quieter, which suits riders who are comfortable after a few days in Ha Giang.
How busy is Ban Gioc?
Vietnamese weekends and public holidays are busy at the waterfall itself. On a weekday outside holiday season you may share it with a couple of dozen people.
Do we cross into China?
No. Ban Gioc sits on the border and half the falls are Chinese, but the tour stays entirely on the Vietnamese side and no border formalities are involved.
