FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions that arrive in our inbox every week, answered properly. If yours is not here, message us — we answer within a couple of hours during the day in Vietnam.

Before you book

I am travelling solo. Will I be on my own?

No. Group departures leave daily and usually carry eight to twelve people, so solo travellers ride in company from the first morning. If you would rather have the trip to yourself, every package can run privately.

How do I pay, and when?

A deposit confirms the booking; the balance is settled in Ha Giang city before departure, in cash or by card at our office. We will send a written confirmation with the exact amounts before you pay anything.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to three weeks in September and October or around Vietnamese public holidays. A few days is usually fine the rest of the year, though private rooms in the homestays go first.

Riding and bikes

Can I ride without a licence?

Not legally, and not with us. You need a 1968-convention international driving permit endorsed A or A1 plus your national licence. Without one, book the easy rider option — a local driver rides and you sit behind.

Do you have automatic scooters?

No, deliberately. An automatic gives no engine braking on long descents, which on a road like this puts everything on the brakes. Our standard bike is a semi-automatic: you change gear with your foot, there is no clutch lever, and the training session before departure is enough for most people.

Can two of us share one bike?

Yes. Book self-riding twice and we upgrade you free to a 125cc bike so it handles the passes with two riders and luggage.

What if I fall?

Damage cover on the bike is included. Guides carry a first aid kit and know the nearest clinic. Anything beyond a graze needs your own travel insurance, which we ask every rider to hold — see the safety guide.

On the road

What can I bring?

A small backpack that straps to the bike. Suitcases and large packs stay in our locked storage in Ha Giang city at no charge until you return.

What are the homestays like?

Family houses in villages: raised sleeping platforms with mattresses and mosquito nets, shared bathrooms, dinner cooked by the family. A private room costs 400,000 ₫ per two people per night and must be arranged before you leave the city.

Is the food included, and what is it?

All meals on the itinerary are included: rice, grilled meat, garden vegetables, tofu, soup, and whatever the family cooked that day. Vegetarian and allergy requirements are fine with notice — tell us when you book, not at the table.

Will I have phone signal?

Patchy. Viettel has the best mountain coverage; expect dead spots on the passes and around Du Gia. Guides carry local numbers and know where signal returns.

Getting there and back

How do I get to Ha Giang?

By road only — there is no airport or railway. Six to seven hours from Hanoi, about six from Sapa or Cao Bang, eight to ten from Cat Ba or Ha Long. We do not sell tickets, but tell us where you are coming from and we will name the operator to book and where it actually stops.

When do the tours finish?

Between 15:00 and 18:00 depending on the package, which leaves time for an evening bus out the same day. The four-day trip finishes earliest.

Where do I sleep the night before?

Every motorbike package includes a free dorm bed in Ha Giang city the night before your start date. Upgrade to a private room or a hotel if you prefer and we will book it for you.
